Outdoor sessions are not the right choice when your photo has to match other people’s. Rice Village and Rice University are a short walk from the studio, which is why most outdoor sessions happen there: live oaks, brick arcades and quiet lanes that photograph like a campus in any season. Hermann Park and the Museum District give green backgrounds and the reflecting pool. Memorial Park is the choice for a natural, athletic feel. For a city look we use the Downtown skyline from the Sabine Street bridge area, Discovery Green and the streets around Market Square, or the walkable blocks of the Heights and Montrose for something more neighborhood-shaped.

If your work is tied to a place, we go there. A realtor who farms Bellaire gets Bellaire. A restaurant consultant gets a patio. A Medical Center physician who wants a warmer photo than the white-coat standard can be photographed in the courtyard outside the office. How We Shoot in Houston Light

Houston’s problem is not light; it’s too much of it. Midday sun is directly overhead and harsh, and from May to September the humidity makes anyone look like they’ve run a mile. So we schedule outdoor sessions in the hour after sunrise or the two hours before sunset, when the light is low, soft and slightly warm. In summer that means early mornings for anyone who doesn’t want to glow. In winter, late afternoon sessions are comfortable and the light lasts.

On location we work with open shade and a reflector rather than flash, so the result looks like daylight and not like a studio dragged outdoors. We choose backgrounds with depth so the blur behind you is soft and the attention stays on your face. Wardrobe matters more outside than in the studio: solid mid-tones and jewel tones separate from greenery and concrete, white washes out in sun, and black turns into a hole. Bring two options and we’ll tell you which one works before we start.

Weather is checked the day before and the morning of. If rain or wind gets in the way, we reschedule at no charge, or move the session into the Rice Village studio if you’re on a deadline. Retouched files are delivered the same day for morning sessions and never later than the next day for evening ones.
