Houston has more places to get a headshot than almost any city its size, from photographers who shoot nothing else to self-service pods in coworking spaces. That’s good news if you know what you need and confusing if you don’t. This guide walks through the options, what they cost, where they are, and how to decide. We run a headshot studio in Rice Village, so we have a point of view, but the comparison is honest: some of these options are the right call for some people. At Pixel Studio Productions, a studio headshot session is a flat $150: a 30-minute guided session, one retouched image, delivered the same day, at our Rice Village studio.
A dedicated headshot photographer. Houston has a cluster of studios that shoot headshots as their main business, mostly in Sawyer Yards and the Heights, plus ours in Rice Village. Sessions run 20 to 45 minutes, cost $125 to $250 for an individual, and include posing direction, a choice of backgrounds and retouched files. This is the option for anyone whose photo will be seen by clients, recruiters or patients.
An on-site team day. For companies, the photographer brings lights and a backdrop to your office and photographs everyone in 10 to 15 minutes each. Per-person cost drops with headcount, usually to $60–$150, and the payoff is a team page where every photo matches. Below five people it rarely makes sense; book studio slots instead.
A self-service pod. Studio Pod and similar setups let you walk in, pose in front of a fixed camera and pick your shots for $50–$65. You get a clean, acceptable photo. You don’t get a photographer telling you your chin is too high, and the retouching is light. Fine for an internal directory, thin for a partner bio.
AI headshots. Upload selfies, get a generated “professional” photo for $20–$40. The results are plausible until someone who knows you looks closely. For a public profile we’d skip it; for an internal Slack avatar, nobody minds.
Across the studios we’ve compared, individual sessions cluster between $125 and $250. Anything advertised under $100 is usually a pod, a mini-session with a single look, or a photographer who does headshots occasionally. Executive portrait sessions with an hour of shooting and multiple looks run $350–$600. Our own pricing is on the headshot pricing page: $150 for a studio session with same-day delivery, team rates by headcount.
Two things to ask any studio before booking: is retouching included in the price, and how many final images do you get. Those two lines are where a cheap quote becomes an expensive one.
Sawyer Yards / Washington Avenue (77007). The densest cluster of headshot photographers in Houston, in converted warehouse studios. Good choice if you’re on the west side of Downtown.
Rice Village / Medical Center (77005). Our studio at 2414 Sunset Blvd, between Rice University and the Texas Medical Center. The natural choice for physicians, residents, university staff and anyone in West U, Bellaire or Montrose. Free parking.
Galleria / Uptown. Fewer dedicated headshot studios; most companies here book on-site team days instead.
The Woodlands, Katy, Sugar Land. A handful of portrait photographers offer headshots. For a company in these areas, an on-site day from a Houston studio is usually simpler than sending everyone into town.
You’ll get a wardrobe note before the session: solid colors, jewel tones, avoid busy patterns and logos, bring a second option (see our guide on what to wear for a photoshoot). The session itself is about 30 minutes: a few minutes to settle in, then the photographer works through angles and expressions while giving direction. Most people hate this part for the first five minutes and relax by minute ten. You’ll pick favorites on screen, and a good studio delivers retouched files the same day or within 48 hours.
Retouching should be light: blemishes, stray hairs, under-eye softening. If a studio’s samples look like plastic, keep looking.
Two outfits on hangers. Glasses if you wear them daily (anti-glare helps). Your company’s brand colors if the photo is for a team page. A phone screenshot of the layout the photo will go in, so the photographer can frame for it.
If Rice Village works for you, book a session or call (832) 767-1543. Studio hours are Monday to Friday 10–6 and Saturday 10–3.
